Instagram debuted a brand-new function called Notes on Tuesday. It is located in Instagram's Message section and enables users to create a text-only status update that is similar to a Story. You can only submit one Note at a time, and altering it will delete your prior status, similar to the old AIM away messages. Additionally, only "Close Friends" or persons with whom you have a shared friend relationship can see the posts you make.
It's
not entirely clear what people will do with this yet. Will it be like AIM, with
people posting cryptic song lyrics? Will it be similar to Twitter, but with
only one short message at a time? Nobody knows!
The
Notes function will either burn out and go unused, like the old Facebook Poke, or
we'll all eventually agree on what it "should" look like. You should
use this opportunity while people are still unsure of what Notes are and how we
should utilize it.
